Casa Summers. Suona la sveglia, ma Buffy la spegne e sospira. E' mattina, e con una sequenza di musica che fa da sottofondo a diverse scene vediamo: Willow e Tara che si alzano e rifanno il letto, (scena in cui Tara solleva un cuscino e trova dei piccoli fiori secchi che Willow ha usato, a sua insaputa, nell'incantesimo per farle dimenticare che avevano litigato. Lei sorride e poi li annusa.) Poi Dawn che bussa alla porta del bagno fino a quando Willow esce. Intanto Buffy sta ancora poltrendo a letto. Più tardi, al magic shop, Xander e Anya stanno leggendo la rivista per spose, "Tomorrow's Bride", mentre Giles silenziosamente nega a Dawn di leggere un libro che lei non dovrebbe leggere. Willow e Tara fanno delle ricerche, mentre Buffy disegna fino a quando arriva Giles con un'ascia, facendo cenno che è ora di allenarsi. La sera, Buffy va in perlustrazione da sola in cimitero ed inizia a cantare "Going through emotions" e contemporaneamente combatte contro due vampiri, che a tratti cantano insieme a lei.

Magic Shop. Il giorno seguente, quando Buffy chiede agli altri se anche loro la notte prima avessero cantato, le loro analoghe esperienze li inducono a cantare la canzone, "I've got a Theory", in cui tutta la gang canta le loro teorie sulla causa del loro strano e musicale comportamento.

La musica si interrompe e tutti sono consapevoli di ciò che è accaduto. Xander dice che è strano. E Buffy chiede cosa debbano fare, mentre Anya si chiede se siano solo loro a cantare. Allora Buffy si avvicina alla porta e sbirciando fuori vede un signore [interpretato da David Fury, uno degli autori di BTVS] che canta "Mustard", e dei ballerini.

Dawn ritorna da scuola per parlare anche lei della sua giornata musicale. Willow e Tara vanno via per fare delle ricerche, ma in realtà le due vogliono stare un po' da sole, lasciandosi dietro la gang e Dawn che segretamente prende un ciondolo. Al parco, Tara canta il suo amore per Willow in "I'm under your spell", e la canzone continua fino a quando le due arrivano a casa.

La mattina seguente, Xander e Anya sono sdraiati nel letto. Dopo i due ballano e si cantano a vicenda in "I'll never tell", le loro lamentele e preoccupazioni sul loro imminente matrimonio.

In una strada di Sunnydale, Xander e Anya passeggiano assieme a Giles. La coppia discute spensieratamente e entrambi si sfogano con Giles. Sembra come se loro si siano detti tutte le loro paure in una canzone! Nel frattempo, incontrano delle persone che canticchiano o ballano, come una donna [interpretata da Marty Noxon, autrice e produttrice esecutiva di BTVS] che canta e implora un poliziotto di non farle una multa per divieto di sosta.

Buffy va a fare una visita a Spike alla sua cripta, dove lui si sta ubriacando. Lei vuole delle informazioni, ma lui non ha niente da offrirle ... solo una canzone, "Rest in peace". Spike le canta la sua interpretazione di ciò che lei prova per lui, sapendo che lei lo sta solo usando e vuole che lei lo lasci andare. Poi i due si spostano al cimitero, dove Spike sgarbatamente interrompe un funerale, ballando e cantando sulla bara. Allora Buffy lo trascina via per evitare che lui faccia del male alle persone presenti alla cerimonia e i due cadono dentro ad una tomba vuota, la cosa spaventa e confonde Buffy tanto da farla scappare via.

Tara trova Dawn e tenta di spiegarle, senza metterla in agitazione, lo strano comportamento della città. Poi, Dawn le accenna della lite tra Willow e Tara cosa che le fa capire di essersene dimenticata e che i fiori secchi che aveva trovato sotto il cuscino potevano esserne la causa. Rimasta sola, Dawn indossa il ciondolo che aveva trovato al Magic shop ed inizia a cantare "Dawn's lament", quando viene rapita da un gruppo di demoni.

Dawn si risveglia al Bronze. Una musica d'orchestra inizia a suonare e lei comincia a ballare, ma viene subito intrappolata dai tre demoni che l'avevano rapita. Lei fa delle piroette, salta, tenta di scappare, ma i tre demoni la impediscono di fuggire. Dawn è spaventata e confusa, poi viene gettata ai piedi di Sweet.

Sweet canta che lei lo ha invocato e che adesso Dawn diventerà la sua sposa, la sua regina, una volta tornati nella sua dimensione demoniaca. Lei replica che è troppo giovane e che Buffy sentirà la sua mancanza. Appena pronuncia la parola "Cacciatrice", il demone reagisce e dice ai suoi servi di andare dalla Cacciatrice e di dirle ogni cosa, perché vuole vederla bruciare.

Buffy, mentre si sta allenando con Giles, gli parla di come si prenda cura di Dawn e Giles le risponde con una canzone "Standing in the way", che lei non è preparata per il mondo e di come lui la stia trattenendo dal farlo, cercando di essere per lei una figura paterna, ma Buffy, troppo presa dai suoi esercizi fisici, non sente neanche una parola di ciò che canta.

Nel frattempo, Tara arriva al Magic shop per cercare informazioni sull'incantesimo che sospetta Willow le abbia fatto. Così inizia un duetto tra lei e Giles dove i due cantano, "I'm Under Your Spell" e "Wish I Could Stay", dove spiegano che stanno pianificando di lasciare le persone che li feriscono e usano: Willow e Buffy.

Spike si presenta al Magic shop con uno dei servi di Sweet che informa Buffy e i suoi amici che Dawn è in pericolo e che ha bisogno di lei. Quando Giles sostiene che Buffy deve andare da sola, Spike si arrabbia e alla fine afferma di sperare che entrambe le ragazze brucino. Mentre va a cercare Sweet e sua sorella, Buffy e Spike, a debita distanza, iniziano a cantare "Walk through the fire", e presto si unirà a loro anche Sweet, mentre Spike continua a cantare i suoi confusi sentimenti per Buffy. Anche il resto della Scooby gang si unisce a loro: Spike e Tara cantano sull'amore, Buffy e Sweet sul loro imminente incontro e del salvataggio di Dawn, infine, Giles e Willow sui loro piani per sconfiggere il demone.

Arrivata al Bronze, Buffy propone a Sweet un accordo: scambiare la sua vita con quella di Dawn e ciò li induce nuovamente a ballare e cantare "Life's a Show", mentre fa fuori i servi di Sweet, con i cori di Anya e Tara. Nella canzone rivela di essere stata in Paradiso, e ciò sconvolge tutti, soprattutto Willow che inizia a piangere. Con i suoi amici accanto a lei, profondamente turbati da ciò che ha rivelato, Buffy inizia a ballare senza controllo e ad emanare fumo. Allora, Spike le si avvicina per fermarla prima che vada in fiamme, e le canta la brutale verità della vita.

Dopo che il numero musicale finisce, Sweet continua a rifiutarsi di liberare Dawn, ma quest'ultima sa che lei non lo ha invocato, anche se ha trovato il ciondolo. Allora Xander ammette di esser stato lui, perché voleva allontanare la tensione e far emergere la verità prima del suo matrimonio. Ma per sua fortuna Sweet, non lo prende come sua sposa e se ne va con una canzone.
